4 Tips to Make Gynecologist Appointments More Comfortable For You

Going to see a gynecologist can make some women feel nervous and uncomfortable. Here are a few tips that you may want to consider in order to help make your gynecological appointments much easier for you.

1. Confide In Your Gynecologist

If you're feeling really anxious about having your gynecologist perform an exam on you, make sure you confide in them about it. Chances are very good that your gynecologist truly cares about his or her patients. Therefore, he or she will definitely want to know about any fears or concerns that you have so that they can help set your mind at ease.

2. Try These Pain Management Techniques

When you are feeling anxious or stressed, the muscles in your body are more likely to tighten and clench up. Take some slow deep breaths while the gynecologist is inserting the speculum into your vagina. This should help a great deal to relax your pelvic floor muscles, which will make the insertion process much easier for you.

If you are still experiencing pain, you may want to ask your gynecologist to try using a pediatric speculum. Since these particular types of speculums are smaller, some women find them to be a lot more comfortable.

3. Listen to Music

Listening to music is an excellent way to feel more calm and relaxed. Bring a pair of headphones with you to your gynecologist appointment so that you can listen to some of your favorite songs. Just plug your headphones into your phone and let the music serve as a welcome distraction from any discomfort that you might be experiencing.

You may even want to create a special playlist of songs prior to arriving at your gynecologist's office. Classical music tends to be especially soothing. However, if you prefer other types of music such as classic rock or country, then go ahead and listen to that music instead.

4. Shave or Wax before Your Appointment

Some women feel self conscious about having a gynecologist examine their vagina. You should keep in mind that gynecologists are used to seeing women of all different shapes and sizes and that there's really nothing to feel embarrassed about. However, if it makes you feel more presentable to shave or wax before your appointment, then you should by all means do so.

There's no doubt about it that some women don't find going to the gynecologist to be a very pleasant experience. Fortunately, though, trying some of these tips should help your next visit go much more smoothly.
